A green airplane – cost efficient?

Southwest Airlines said Wednesday that it is testing a variety of environmentally friendly materials on a refurbished “green plane” that could result in cutting enough weight from the aircraft to save the company about $10.3 million in fuel costs if the concept is rolled out fleetwide.

The Boeing 737-700 plane, which cost about $40 million before it was refurbished to be “green,” has environmentally friendly products sprinkled throughout the cabin and elsewhere, ranging from the carpet to seat covers to life vest pouches.
