Did you have the New Years resolution to get your house cleaned and organized? Even if it’s not New Year’s, it’s a goal many of us make. But somehow, it doesn’t always get done, or get done all the way…sometimes the big jobs sit undone year after year.

Why? It may be because the big jobs seem too overwhelming to tackle, and you think it’s not worth even trying if you don’t have a whole week to dedicate to that one job.

With that mentality, you’re right – it will never get done! So let’s change the way you look at big cleaning jobs. To make big cleaning jobs more doable, break them into doable bits. Yes, it’s worth it – don’t be tempted to think that there’s no use doing anything if you can’t do it all at once. Here are some tips on how to break up those big jobs into small tasks.

Motivate the Family

Whether it’s cleaning out the garage, attic, or basement, or cleaning out all the clutter from the bedrooms, big jobs are best done as a group effort. It’s almost never a case of one person’s stuff – nearly everyone in the family has mess somewhere, so delegating and asking each person to take care of his or her own mess is a start toward making it more doable.

Motivational tips include:

* Point out how much neat stuff you’ll find when you clean out – “I was wondering where I put that” or “I wondered what happened to that” are common exclamations when cleaning!

* Note the unsanitary and even unsafe conditions that can come with accumulated clutter – vermin can infest it, mold can cover it, and clutter (especially paper) can be a fire hazard.

* Offer incentives like going out for dessert after dinner or having a fun take-out food and game/movie night.

Cleaning Party

For big jobs like cleaning out the basement or garage, it helps to elicit help from others. Make specific to-do lists and hand them out to your workers, breaking the big job down into smaller ones that can be done by individuals. And make sure you repay them: give out “coupons” for cleaning help at their house that you can come and do, and/or have everyone stay for dinner. Have a big cake or other special dessert to celebrate and thank them.

List the Tasks Required

Even if you are not hosting a cleaning party, you can make a list of tasks as if you were. Pretend you are managing the big cleaning job and you have to assign tasks to employees (this can help if you are eliciting help from family members, too). Here is a sample list of tasks that might go into a big cleaning job, such as cleaning out the basement:

* Go through boxes – two boxes per person at a time – and throw out or donate what is not needed.

* Consolidate “keeper” items into boxes and plastic bins.

* Stack bins against the wall and label their contents.

* Sweep and/or vacuum basement floor.

* Call junk hauling service to take care of big items that need to be scrapped.

* Store items to donate in another room, and schedule a trip or trips to the second-hand store.

Give Yourself Time

If you are doing things in steps, it’s going to take a bit. Give yourself time; anything you do is working toward getting the big job done. And remember, it’s been sitting undone for so long that another few months or weeks won’t hurt!

Some tips for maximizing your coffee table functionality and cutting down on clutter.

When you use these tools right, you take the worry out of your head and put it onto something concrete (like paper). This eliminates stress in the long run, and in the moment because you have something to look at when an emergency comes up. But it also helps keep you on track during the day for more mundane tasks.

How many times have you gone somewhere, then realized that you forgot what you needed there? We’ve all done it. You can use lists at home, just like shopping lists at the store.

They

Save time

Save energy

Prevent stress

When it comes to cleaning or organizing your house, using lists or check lists is smart. You can buy printable formats that you can reprint as often as you need, or make a master list that you save on your computer.

You could even save a PDF or list to your hand held device like your iPod or tablet computer.

Whatever works for you is fine! Experiment and don’t give up, you’ll find something that works really well for you before too long.

Why do you want to organize your home? I had my own reasons and my reasons are probably not the same as yours. Maybe it’s because you don’t have a lot of clutter but need a better way to find what you do have. Or, maybe it’s because you do have a lot of stuff – too much stuff. Are you hording for emotional reasons, or time constraints?

Some benefits of decluttering;

-Stress reduced by knowing where things are and being able to find them quickly.

-Understanding what to keep and how not to bring more stuff in.

-Creating useful systems to live by

-Keeps you on time

So, the point is that once you get organized, get rid of the clutter, it creates a space in your head and your home. You’ll be able to enjoy yourself and your family more.

It doesn’t matter where you come from, how old you are, or where you live right now. Clearing up your home can help you feel better.

I’ve started doing little tasks every other day to remove clutter and help keep things from piling up. When your “stuff” piles up, it becomes overwhelming and easier to avoid than to take care of. Or so we think.

Something like taking the pile of papers to the shredder or trash actually takes just a few minutes – do it during commercials in the evening. That only takes two minutes at a time.

I like to use lists or forms to keep on track. My mind is cluttered too and that is often what leads to my house being cluttered. If I walk from one room to the next, I may forget what I was doing in the first place. So having my list helps keep me doing what I need to do.

Being organized makes it all a lot easier.
It’s not going to make you rich but it can save you money by avoiding duplicate purchases and late bills.

It’s not going to make you any younger, but it will certainly give you more time to do things you might think you don’t have time to do.

Being organized isn’t going to give you a bigger house, but it will clear clutter and open up some space so you’ll feel like you have a bigger house because there will be less congestion and “stuff” all over the place.

There may seem like there is a lot to getting organized and over the next few days I’m going to share with you even more tips and tricks to getting and staying organized.

Organizing is on my brain lately. So, I figured, “why not blog about it”? I’m beginning a category of blog posts here at Alex Shares about organization.

Do I hear groaning in the back of the room?

Let me tell you, if I didn’t do it daily or weekly, I’d be lost and a huge mess trying to run 2 or 3 blogs and 2 business and manage my 2 kids with their special needs, and help run the family’s shop. You get the idea?

So, as part of this category, I’ll be writing tips, tutorials and articles related to managing your household and everything that goes with it.

Starting off today is this short organizing tip and a fun quote.

Express version – area organizing: remove only the clutter that’s visible to the eye. The space will feel more organized, motivating you to tackle the rest of it in the near future.

Webster’s defines clutter as “a confused multitude of things”.

What’s “confused” in your space? What is not where it belongs - i.e., have no point being there— making any part of the space unusable.

For instance, piles of schoolwork on the kitchen counter, shoes thrown on the floor by the couch, clean clothes piled on the table.

Now, go put them where they belong, or find someone else who will.
